Description

Victorian English gilt silver vinaigrette by Nathaniel Mills, hallmarked Birmingham, circa 1842. This finely made piece has a shaped rectangular form with softly scalloped edges and bold, scrolling foliate engraving across the lid and sides. At the center is a monogrammed cartouche, framed by dense, hand-cut ornament typical of the period.

The interior is gilt and opens to reveal the original pierced and engraved grille, designed to hold a scented sponge or perfume-soaked material—an elegant 19th-century personal accessory carried to freshen the air or mask unpleasant odors. The vinaigrette stands on small integral pad feet, and the hinge and closure align well, presenting as a crisp, sturdy example.

Dimensions: 2.45" wide x 1" long x 0.3" tall.
Condition: Excellent antique condition, with light surface wear consistent with age and use; the engraving remains sharp and the gilding is bright.
