Description

A striking and historically rich bronze issue from Roman Egypt, this large Alexandrian drachm showcases the refined portraiture characteristic of Antoninus Pius’ peaceful reign. The obverse presents a laureate and draped bust of the emperor facing right, executed in a dignified style with well-preserved facial detail and clear legend.

The reverse, dated L K (Year 20), features one of the diverse and fascinating designs for which Alexandrian coinage is renowned—often incorporating Egyptian religious iconography, Nilotic symbolism, or classical mythological figures. These reverses vividly reflect the unique cultural fusion of Roman imperial authority and ancient Egyptian tradition.

Struck on a broad flan and prized for both size and artistic merit, Alexandrian drachms are among the most collectible provincial issues of the Roman world.

Condition: Choice Very Fine (Ch VF), displaying well-defined details, readable legends, and attractive surfaces, offering excellent eye appeal for the grade.

A desirable and substantial piece, ideal for collectors of Roman provincial coinage or those seeking a distinctive artifact from ancient Egypt under Roman rule.
