Description

A highly attractive and well-preserved provincial bronze issued under Emperor Hadrian from the important Decapolis city of Philadelphia. The obverse presents a sharply rendered laureate and cuirassed bust of Hadrian facing right, capturing the emperor at the height of Rome’s power and stability. The portrait is bold and expressive, with strong facial detail and well-defined legend.

The reverse displays a classic civic type—likely the youthful Herakles or the turreted Tyche—symbolizing both strength and the prosperity of the city. The devices remain clear and well-centered, with pleasing wear consistent with a high-grade Very Fine example.

Struck circa AD 117–138, this coin originates from Philadelphia, one of the culturally rich Hellenistic cities of the Decapolis, a league that blended Greco-Roman and Near Eastern traditions. Pieces from this mint are increasingly sought after for their historical significance and connection to the Biblical world.

This example stands out for its strong strike, attractive patina, and overall eye appeal—qualities that place it solidly in the upper tier of available specimens. A compelling and collectible piece of Roman provincial coinage, ideal for both seasoned collectors and those drawn to the history of the ancient Near East.
