Description

A substantial bronze follis struck in Constantinople during the thirteenth regnal year of Emperor Justinian I, one of the most influential rulers of Late Antiquity. These large copper coins formed the backbone of everyday commerce across the Byzantine Empire and are notable for their bold, easily recognizable design.

The obverse presents a striking helmeted and cuirassed frontal bust of Justinian, holding a globus cruciger, symbolizing Christian dominion and imperial authority. The reverse is dominated by the large letter “M”, indicating the denomination of 40 Nummi, accompanied by a cross above and the inscription “ANNO XIII”, clearly dating the coin to AD 539/540. The mintmark CON below identifies its origin in Constantinople, the imperial capital.

Coins from this period—particularly the large folles of years 12–14—are well regarded for their impressive size and strong artistic style, reflecting the prosperity and ambition of Justinian’s reign at its height.  During this time, the empire was expanding its territories and undertaking monumental achievements such as the construction of Hagia Sophia and the codification of Roman law.

This example, struck on a large flan typical of the series, offers a tangible connection to the economic and political life of the 6th‑century Byzantine world. Its bold design, historic dating, and association with one of Rome’s last great emperors make it a highly desirable and iconic collectible.
