The $4 gold coin, known as the Stella, was never meant for circulation. Minted in 1879 and 1880 as an experiment in international coinage, it’s one of the most coveted pieces in American numismatics.

There are two breathtaking styles. The Flowing Hair Stella features Liberty with soft, elegant waves—a portrait of serenity. The Coiled Hair version is more sculptural, with Liberty’s hair tightly wound in classical fashion. Both are stunning, both are rare, and both are steeped in intrigue.

These coins were struck in extremely limited numbers, often given to members of Congress as samples. Today, they’re among the most prized possessions in any advanced collection.
